What I love about sport is that it sometimes throws you a massive curve ball; sometimes the minnows beat the giants or whatever you do, things just seem to not work out.
We had one of those days! Having won our group, beating Repton, The Pearl and Raha, we went through to the semi-final against a strong team from West Yas. The boys played brilliantly and 8 minutes later we were in the final against The Pearl (who had qualified as the strongest losers). In the final, we must have had 25 shots to their 6 but the ball just would not go into the basket. This led to a 2-minute “golden basket” session. We thought we had it won when the ball went into the basket, only for it to spin around the ring three times and then pop out! Eventually, the game finished all level and it was down to a shoot off. Lady Luck did not shine on us here either, with all three of our shots hitting the rim and deflecting away. In the end, The Pearl clinched it (congratulations to them) and left our boys feeling devastated.
It is a tough but valuable lesson to learn.
However, I want to end by focusing on the positives: this is a very talented group of boys and what they have achieved in only 6 short weeks is testament to how hard they have trained and the dedication they have shown. They have really gelled as a team and can hold their heads high for coming runners-up. I know they will have huge amounts of success ahead of them and this is just one ‘moment’ in what I know will be very positive sporting careers. Well done to: Charlie, Conor, Jaume, Gilly, Danny and Luka.
