Sixth Form (Year 12) 2017/18
Registrations are open for places in Year 12, the first year of Sixth Form, which will open in September 2017. Cranleigh sixth formers will study A Levels and will also undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) which is similar in concept to the IB Extended Essay, but more in-depth in delivery.
Our approach will be different to most schools in Abu Dhabi. From their dedicated Sixth Form Centre on campus, students will be offered a rich academic and leadership programme designed to develop high levels of independent thinking and self confidence. This will include Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and The Purvis Society – our senior enrichment programme – which features opportunities to take part in Model United Nations, Youth Circles and other selected debating, public speaking and academic opportunities. In addition, our students will benefit from access to Cranleigh UK’s careers-for-life programme – the Cranleigh Network – as well as its Old Cranleighan (OC) Society which together, give us access to a wealth of professional and industry experience on a global scale. From individual mentorships and work placements to the Sixth Form Supper Club, our students will be very actively encouraged to start preparing for their university and professional journeys from the moment they start Year 12. More information here.
Much of the academic teaching in the Sixth Form will embrace Harkness, the innovative discussion-based method. Harkness places the onus on the student to prepare for the lesson and come to class ready to discuss topics in a collaborative, tutorial style that encourages and develops listening skills and interaction with other minds. Teachers become facilitators, directing and guiding where necessary. The process ensures every voice is heard and valued and critically, it develops and hones mature, university-style thinking and learning abilities. Classes are small, typically groups of about 12 students, and are held at an oval table.
Please review “The Sixth Form” brochure below to find out more, or contact the Admissions team to discuss entry procedure for your son or daughter. Note that since this brochure was designed, we have added Fine Art to our A Level subject choices.
